Last year, a ten acre parcel of Hilt’s Landing was made available to the Lakeshore Museum Center by Whitehall Township to be developed as the Michigan Heritage Trail.  A generous grant from George and Betty Hilt will enable the museum to explore nearly 1,000 years of Michigan history with the creation of a replica of a Native American Village, Civil War Camp, Underground Railroad Station, Logging Village and more.  The Hilt family’s dream for the site to offer educational opportunities for the residents and visitors of Muskegon County will begin to come to fruition with the Civil War Living History Event in September.

Admission to the Civil War Event will be $5 for adults, $2 for ages 5 – 18 and free admission for children under 5.  A family pass will sell  for $12.  Food and beverages will be available for purchase on site.    The event will take place on Saturday, September 11 from 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday, September 12 from 10 am to 4 pm.

Visitors will meet members of Company F and have an opportunity to tour the camps of the north and south and learn about life there and in a Civilian Camp.   The Company will conduct a drill demonstration with marching and use of Civil War musketry.  Curators from the Museum’s Education Department will present a Civil War Activity for children.  On Sunday, an Ecumenical Service will be held based on revival services that were held for both armies during the war.

Civil War Band

Music will be performed on Saturday by the Dodworth Saxhorn Band, a recreation of one of America’s first all-brass bands.  The ensemble of up to 17 members dresses the part, performs music from that period on original instruments and uses drama, poetry, dance, and audience participation to help bring America’s musical past to life.  Workshops with be offered along with a formal concert.

The Lakeshore Museum Center event is co-sponsored by Company F of the Third Michigan Infantry which is dedicated to educate the general public and preserve all aspects of Civil War Life.  It will be a fun family event and the first of many special events to be held at the site just off Durham Road in northern Muskegon County.
